How To Use Gun Control Facts

Gun control pros and cons

Gun control facts will have value only if they are used properly. Facts by themselves have no value. It is what we derive from facts that will deliver value. To make gun control facts useful, we should first understand them and then analyze and interpret them. Often, opinions are confused with facts. While facts are real, opinions are reflections of one’s thinking. Therefore in analyzing gun control facts, we should be able to separate facts from opinions.

Where do we find gun control facts? We can spot them in newspaper reports and in several other places. We can readily access these facts in gun control articles dealing with gun control pros and cons. Let us start with some gun crime statistics. It is often claimed by opponents of gun control that the idea of allowing people own guns is to prevent crime. Obviously, this is an opinion and this can be valid only if it is supported by facts. No evidence has been found in support of this view. Gun death statistics only show the opposite to be true.

Gun control facts also include information on gun ownership. Studies have shown that we have about 90 guns for a population of 100 in our country. This is a fact but what conclusion can we derive from them? A simple interpretation of this is that on an average, almost every American has a gun! If we exclude children, then it will mean that there is more than one gun for each person residing in the US. We can understand the potential for danger from this abnormally high gun ownership. Another study shows that suicide rates are high in those regions that have a large gun owning population. This suggests that gun ownership leads not only to murders but also to suicides.

Gun control facts are sometimes countered by arguments. One such argument is that in a democracy, there is no place for any control including gun control. This argument fails to consider that curbs on gun ownership are needed to prevent tyranny, which will be a direct threat to democracy. With gun control facts strongly favoring a stricter gun control legislation, the pro gun lobby adopts various means to sabotage any move towards gun control. The action of some pro NRA (National Rifles Association) in making rules that make it difficult for the CDC to study gun violence is an example of this.

Issues for Gun Control Debate

Gun crime statistics

The gun control debate has been going on for the past few decades with the issue still remaining unresolved. Can there be news issues for discussion in the gun control debate? I will suggest that the only two issues that need to be focused on in a gun control debate are gun control facts and the attitude of the two sides to the issue of gun control.

Let us start with gun control facts. Though gun control pros and cons are routinely included in a gun control debate, I feel that gun crime statistics have not been adequately discussed. The debate has been going on more on the academic aspects. If only gun death statistics had been given the seriousness they deserved, the gun control debate would long have been settled in favor of making the gun control laws tighter.

The gun control debate should study the comparative results for different countries. For example, gun death statistics reveal that the US is ranked worse than South Africa in the ratio of the number of gun deaths to 100,000 people. Results obtained in countries that have implemented stricter gun control laws should also be discussed. Statistics show that gun control laws have brought down not only murders but also suicides, in these countries. This is an interesting fact since while talking about gun crime, we think only about murders. The fact that gun is a very convenient weapon for people seeking to kill themselves should weigh heavily in favor of restricting gun ownership. Since it has been well established that many suicides take place on impulse, the danger of people using guns to end their lives in an emotional moment looms large. Gun control debate should send the message across that we have a duty to protect our near and dear from resorting to suicides using the guns we make so readily available to them.

When it comes to examining the attitude of people supporting either side, the gun control debate should being to light the recalcitrant attitude of the pro gun lobby symbolized by the assertion of the NRA (National Rifles Association) that it will not compromise on its opposition to gun control laws. The gun control debate should also highlight the actions of the pro NRA legislators in creating new rules with a view to blocking independent organizations like the CDC and the National Institute of Health from even studying gun violence.

What Should A Gun Control Essay Discuss?

Gun control facts

Writing a gun control essay appears to be the easiest thing in the world. This is the impression one gets by looking at the countless number of gun control articles that appear in the print media. But, in my opinion, a gun control essay should serve a purpose. Gun control is such an important topic that has been gaining nationwide attention. A well written gun control essay will enrich the gun control debate by highlighting the facts that are relevant to the issue of gun control.

The gun control essay should start with the discussion of gun control facts. These facts include gun crime statistics and information relating to gun ownership. Some of the facts and figures that should find a place in the gun control essay are listed below.

1) The most important information that should be included in the essay is about the gun ownership. How many guns are there in the United States and how does this number relate to the population of the country? Studies show that the US has about half of the guns in the world, though the population of the US is just 5 percent of the population of the world. Another item of statistics reveals that for every 100 people in our country, there are 89 guns. The ratio is close to almost one gun per person.

2)The next set of data to be covered by the gun control essay is gun death statistics. The number of people killed by guns every year in the US is estimated to be about 30,000. When this data is read along with the data on gun ownership, a person reading the gun control essay can understand the link between gun ownership and murders.

3) Comparative figures will always depict any situation more effectively. So, the gun control essay can present the number of gun deaths as a ratio of the population for each country. When this ratio is computed for different countries, it is found that the US performs worse than a much less developed country like South Africa. The significance of this is bound to be noticed by people reading the gun control essay.

4) In addition to discussing gun control facts, the gun control essay should also examine the attitude of the gun control opponents by pointing out that the National Rifles Association (NRA), despite its claim to be a political organization, is only a lobbyist group.

Gun Control Pros and Cons Need Consideratio

Gun control debate

It is in keeping with the healthy practice of looking at both the sides of an issue that gun control pros and cons are being considered. In any gun control debate, people taking up positions on either side will present their arguments supporting them with facts and figures on the one hand and logical arguments on the other. Gun control pros and cons include gun crime statistics which cannot be ignored while studying the issue of gun control.

Let us take a few gun control pros and cons to understand the topic in proper perspective. What are the gun control facts supporting stricter gun control laws? Gun death statistics have brought out the fact that in areas where more people own guns, gun crimes are also more. In fact, a study shows that not only murders but even suicides increase with the number of guns in a place. It is an irony that while the pro gun ownership people claim that having a gun is a good way protecting oneself and one’s family, the reality is that it increases the chances of gun death in the family by way of murder or suicide.

The other side of the above mentioned fact is also revealed by gun crime statistics. The number of murders is smaller in countries where the number of guns is smaller. Thus, gun control pros and cons show that gun crime varies directly with the number of guns. Another fact to be included in the gun control pros and cons is that 39 percent of the children know where guns are kept in their houses! This shocking revelation raises the question of safety arising from gun ownership. How are we going to stop the children from using guns indiscriminately?

Now, what are the gun control pros and cons raised by the anti gun control lobby? This lobby which is led by the National Rifles Association (NRA) does not bother to present arguments in support of its stand. The NRA has made it clear that it will not compromise on its stand. This means that gun control pros and cons will have no impact on the thinking of the anti gun control groups. The action of the pro NRA legislators in placing obstacles on the path of CDC in its efforts to study gun violence is in keeping with this attitude.

Where Will The Gun Control Debate Lead Us To?

Gun control articles

Sometimes, I wonder what the purpose of a gun control debate is. This is not like an academic debate that takes place either as a contest or as a form of entertainment. Gun control debate takes place at various levels making a threadbare analysis of gun control pros and cons with the aim of bringing out all the relevant facts and arguments into the public arena.

Unfortunately, the gun control debate has been going on for too long in our country. It has not thrown up any new issues. Gun control facts may need updating with new gun death statistics figures being compiled everyday. I have come across two updated gun crime statistics. One is that a high percentage of homicide crimes (about 60 percent ) are caused by the use of guns. The second one is the finding that strict gun control measures will bring down not only the number of murders but also the number of suicides. I am not sure whether the gun control debate will be enriched by this information since this is only a confirmation of the trend being witnessed over the past few decades.

But what is the response of the anti gun control lobby to these points brought out in the gun control debate? Either it should accept these facts or counter them, if it can. But opponents of gun control will do neither. They will only raise issues that have no bearing on the gun control facts. These people use frivolous arguments like the desirability of restricting the right to own guns that has been given to us by the 2nd amendment. Perhaps these people are not aware that about 99 percent of this act was prepared by people, though eminent and well versed in various fields, lacked a formal legal education. For its part, the National Rifles Association (NRA) has been threatening legislators that they would be defeated in the primaries and thus would not get a chance to be reelected if they supported gun control measures.

Do You Read Gun Control Articles?

Gun control debate

Not many people read gun control articles. The pages of newspapers and other periodicals and innumerable web pages are flooded with gun control articles. But what purpose will a gun control article serve if it is not read by many? I think that even if the articles are not read by many people, they still contribute to the gun control debate. This is because they carry a lot of information on gun control facts and these data can be used by anyone interested in studying the issue of gun control in detail.

I browsed through several gun control articles in the internet and was astonished at the vastness and depth of the information provided by them. Some of the gun crime statistics they provided were astonishing. For the first time, I learnt that the United states, one of the leading countries of the world performed worse than a relatively less advanced country like South Africa when the gun death figures were expressed as a percentage of population. It was difficult for me to digest that the US was ranked worse than South Africa in an issue relating to the safety of human lives.

Gun control articles also provided the answer to the question as to why the US performed worse than South Africa by presenting another set of gun crime statistics. The answer lay in the fact that the US citizens owned a disproportionately larger share of the guns in the world! The logical conclusion that fewer guns resulted in less crime was confirmed by the information given in another gun control essay.

Gun control articles currently being written should aim to answer the arguments raised by the anti gun control groups like the National Rifles Association (NRA). For example, the argument that gun ownership rights are given to us by the 2nd amendment can be met by making the point that the people behind creating this amendment had no legal background. Therefore, putting some reasonable restrictions on gun ownership cannot be deemed wrong.

Gun control articles should also bring to light the dubious ways of the NRA in threatening the legislators to toe its line if they did not want to lose their primaries.

Gun Control Facts Tell The Truth

Gun law

In the wake of the massacre at Newtown, much of the gun control debate has focused on stricter regulations on military assault rifles. However, an examination of gun control facts in America clearly shows that new regulations must limit the spread of handguns as well.

Government gun control facts show that two thirds of all US murders committed with a gun, the homicide is accomplished using a HANDGUN. Apparently, military style weapons of mass destruction are the preferred tools for those intent on killing many people quickly. The AVERAGE murder however is the result of shooting someone with a pistol.

In Great Britain there are about 550 homicides per year (2011). In the USA there were 12,664 murders of which 8583 were from hand guns.

These gun crime statistics are astonishing. That means that in America there are TWENTY THREE people killed for every ONE in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland combined!

Gun control articles also show that there is a very real correlation between gun deaths and the number of households with guns. In the six states with the highest rates of gun ownership, an average of 53 percent of households owned firearms; in the four states with the lowest rates of gun ownership, an average of 13 percent of households contained firearms. From 1988 to 1997, the high gun states had more than 21,000 individuals who were homicide victims, compared with 7,300 in the low gun states. If you lived in a high gun state you were 4.2 times more likely to die in a gun related homicide than those who in the low gun states.

Gun death statistics are REAL. Gun control facts tell us the truth about gun crime.

As Americans look to create more effective gun control laws we must ensure that gun control facts become well known. Statistics to speak to us. Gun laws that don’t limit handguns will not limit gun deaths.

Another piece of statistics that may have an unsettling effect on you is that a larger
number of children have been victims of homicide in places where a larger number of
households have owned guns. If you have supported uncontrolled gun ownership with
the expectation that it would give protection to your family including children, you will
now realize the irony of the situation.

People who believe that possession of guns by a large number of people may not cause
any danger to the society on the ground that most of the people will have the guns only
for their self-protection may find that gun control facts revealing that guns cause 30,000
deaths per annum in the U.S. shatter their belief.

The problems caused by gun ownership go beyond posing a serious threat to human
lives. They extend into the sphere of Economics as well. Astonishing as the figure may
seem, the economic damages caused by guns are valued at $3.7 billion per year.

Gun control facts stated above are not exhaustive. But even this limited information has
the potential to change your mind on gun control.

Verified gun control facts

If you are a person who is against stricter laws to control the ownership of guns, gun
control facts which I will be presenting here will, in all probability, change your mind.
You might have come across and even dealt with many arguments, both for and against
gun control laws. After all, this is one of the topics that are constantly being debated
almost continuously. People who are against laws seeking to control the possession
and use of guns and other firearms will no doubt have strong reasons to justify their
convictions. But, there are times when we have to look at the facts and reevaluate our
position.

Everyone is concerned at the increasing rate at which homicides occur in several states
and in the country as a whole. Information collected about the homicides reveals a
shocking picture. About 60 percent of the homicides are committed by the use of guns
or other firearms. It is only realistic to expect that any weapon can be used for purposes
for which it was not intended. But won’t you agree that the figure 60 percent is a bit, if
not highly, alarming?

Now, let us look at another picture from the arsenal of gun control facts. Considering
that deaths are being caused by guns in almost all countries of the world, comparative
studies are invariably made. One such study places the United States at a situation
worse than that of South Africa, for the number of deaths per 10,000 citizens.

Gun control facts relating to children are even more alarming. One study reveals
that 39 percent of kids knew where their parents stored their guns. If you can digest
this information, you may begin to understand why the incidents of kids using guns
inappropriately and causing deaths keep increasing by the year. When you realize that
the guns are not safe in our homes, won’t you reexamine your views on gun control
legislation?
